The Benefits of RTT Hypnotherapy

Many women considering hypnotherapy already have a sense that it might help. What they’re less sure about is why — and how it compares to the talking therapies, coaching approaches, or medication they’ve already tried.

This post isn’t about the list of issues hypnotherapy can address. It’s about what makes it work differently — the specific qualities that distinguish it from other approaches, backed where possible by the research that supports them.

I’ll be honest where the evidence is strong, and honest where it’s still emerging. That feels more useful than a marketing page.

1. It works significantly faster than traditional therapy

One of the most frequently cited comparisons in hypnotherapy research comes from a study by Alfred Barrios, which found a 93% recovery rate for hypnotherapy after an average of six sessions, compared to 38% for psychoanalysis after 600 sessions, and 72% for behaviour therapy after 22 sessions. These numbers are widely quoted and worth holding with some nuance — they reflect specific studies rather than universal outcomes. But the direction they point in is consistent with what clinical experience shows: change in hypnotherapy tends to come faster, because we’re working at the level where the pattern actually lives rather than talking around it.

2. It outperforms CBT — and dramatically enhances it when combined

A well-established meta-analysis found that the average patient receiving cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy showed more improvement than 90% of clients receiving CBT alone. A separate meta-analysis of 18 controlled studies found that CBT combined with hypnosis produced 70% greater improvement than CBT alone across anxiety, depression, and pain management. A randomised controlled trial comparing hypnotherapy directly to CBT for depression found hypnotherapy produced 6–8% greater reductions in depression, anxiety, and hopelessness — with those results maintained at 6-month and 12-month follow-ups. CBT is a genuinely effective therapy. Hypnotherapy appears to deepen and accelerate what it does.

3. It goes to the root — not just the symptom

Most approaches to mental and emotional health work at the level of the conscious mind: identifying unhelpful thoughts, challenging them, replacing them with better ones. This is genuinely useful. But it’s working on the 5% of the mind that drives conscious behaviour, while the other 95% — the subconscious, where beliefs, emotional patterns, and automatic responses are stored — continues running the old programme underneath.

RTT hypnotherapy goes directly to the subconscious. Not to suppress or manage what’s there, but to find where the original belief was formed and update it at the source. The difference between managing a pattern and actually changing it.

4. It requires no medication — and has no chemical side effects

Hypnotherapy is entirely medication-free. There is no chemical intervention, no dependency risk, no withdrawal process. According to the Mayo Clinic, adverse side effects from hypnotherapy are rare and mild when they do occur — occasional temporary drowsiness or light-headedness that passes quickly.

The most common “side effect” is actually positive: because hypnotherapy works at the root level of subconscious patterns, improvements frequently generalise across multiple areas of life simultaneously. Clients often notice changes in areas they weren’t directly working on.

5. It doesn’t require you to repeatedly retell your story

One of the most significant differences between hypnotherapy and traditional talking therapy is what it asks of you. Talk therapy, at its best, helps you understand and process difficult experiences. At its worst — or simply when it’s the wrong fit — it can involve repeatedly revisiting painful material without resolution: the same story, retold again, in the same words, with the same emotional weight, session after session.

This is not only exhausting. For some people, particularly those with trauma histories, it can be retraumatising — activating the nervous system in ways that deepen distress rather than process it. RTT hypnotherapy doesn’t require you to narrate your history at length. We go back to the source not to relive it, but to understand it from where you stand now — and change what was concluded there.

6. It harnesses neuroplasticity — rewiring the brain rather than managing it

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s capacity to form new neural pathways throughout life. It’s the mechanism behind all lasting learning and change. Hypnotherapy works directly with neuroplasticity: during hypnosis, the brain enters a highly receptive state in which new connections can form more readily than in ordinary waking consciousness.

Brain imaging research shows that hypnosis produces measurable changes in activity in regions associated with attention, self-awareness, and emotional regulation — the anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in particular. These are the same regions involved in cognitive control and the updating of beliefs. The changes observed during hypnosis provide a neurological explanation for what practitioners have long observed clinically: that insights and shifts that happen during hypnotherapy tend to stick in a way that insights from conversation alone often don’t.

7. The subconscious is where 95% of behaviour originates

Conscious decision-making — the part of you that sets goals, makes plans, and tries to change — drives roughly 5% of daily behaviour. The other 95% runs on autopilot: subconscious beliefs, emotional patterns, and automatic responses that were formed, in most cases, long before you had any say in them. Many of the beliefs running your life were established before the age of seven.

This is why willpower, logic, and conscious intention so often fail to produce lasting change. They’re operating on 5% of the system, while the other 95% continues as before. RTT hypnotherapy communicates directly with that 95% — where the instructions that drive everything else actually live.

8. Changes in one area ripple outward

Because RTT works at the level of core beliefs rather than individual symptoms, the changes it produces tend not to stay contained to the presenting issue. A client who comes to address undercharging in her business and finds the root belief is “I am not enough as I am” will often notice shifts in her relationships, her body image, and her self-advocacy at the same time — because the same belief was driving all of them.

This is one of the things I find most remarkable in my work. Addressing the root releases pressure across the whole system, not just in the area you were consciously working on.

9. The personalised audio extends the work between sessions

RTT includes a personalised audio recording created after each session, designed to be listened to daily for a minimum of 21 days. This isn’t an optional extra — it’s a core part of the method, and it’s grounded in how the brain actually consolidates change.

Neuroplasticity requires repetition. A new neural pathway formed in a session needs to be reinforced consistently before it becomes the brain’s new default. The daily audio provides exactly this: repeated access to the same subconscious state, with the same updated beliefs, until the new pattern becomes automatic. This is how a shift experienced once in a session becomes a settled new way of being.

10. It’s endorsed by multiple medical and psychological associations

Hypnotherapy is not an alternative or fringe modality. A major 2024 review covering two decades of research concluded that hypnosis has received endorsement by multiple medical associations and shown potential to meaningfully impact a range of mental and physical health conditions. The American Psychological Association recognises hypnotherapy as a legitimate clinical intervention. Research institutions including Harvard and Stanford have contributed to the evidence base. The evidence is not yet uniform across every application — but the overall direction is clear, and the legitimacy is established.

11. You remain completely in control throughout

This is worth saying clearly because it’s one of the most common misconceptions: hypnosis is not a state in which you lose control, become unconscious, or can be made to do anything against your will. You remain fully aware throughout the session. You can speak, move, and open your eyes at any point. The hypnotic state is simply one of deep, focused relaxation — similar to the absorbed feeling just before sleep, or when you’re completely immersed in something.

What changes is not your level of awareness, but the quality of it: the critical, analytical part of the mind steps back, allowing direct access to the subconscious. You are always the one in the room. I am simply the guide.

12. Results are lasting — not a management strategy

Perhaps the most important distinction of all. Many therapeutic and coaching approaches produce genuine benefit — but benefit that requires ongoing maintenance. The tools help when you use them. The sessions provide support while they continue. The moment the support stops, the old patterns tend to return.

RTT is designed to produce lasting change rather than ongoing management. Not because it’s a quick fix — the consolidation period after a session is real work. But because it addresses the root rather than the symptom, the change doesn’t depend on continued intervention to hold. One to three sessions, the daily audio for 21 days, and a new baseline is established. That’s the goal: not to be needed indefinitely, but to not be needed at all.

None of this means hypnotherapy is the right choice for everyone in every situation. There are contraindications. There are people for whom a different approach is the right starting point. And the research, while genuinely encouraging, is still maturing in some areas.

But for the women I work with — self-aware, already-done-the-work, tired of managing the same pattern — RTT hypnotherapy tends to reach something that other approaches haven’t. Not because it’s magic. Because it’s working in a different place.
